Cape Town

This amazing city lies only a few kilometres north of the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point where the Atlantic and Indian Ocean meet. On the way there, you even pass Boulders beach, where you can find a whole colony of African Penguins!

Cape Town is probably most known for its prominent landmark: Table Mountain, the mountain forms a stunning backdrop that shapes the skyline of the city. If you like you can climb Table Mountain or for the less active, take the cableway and enjoy the view!

Garden Route & Golf

This almost 200 km-long route along the South-Coast has not stolen its name. Thanks to the year-out mild climate and the great diversity in vegetation, this is one of the most picturesque regions in the world. In its many beautiful bays and hidden corners, there are some many great activities to do but the one that stands out and that the area is most famous for is its abundance of amazing golf courses !

Cape Winelands

Is there a better way to spend the day than with some wine-tasting? Especially in South-Africa, a country which makes some amazing wines. During your Safari and your stay in all the amazing lodges and hotels you will no doubt have some superb wines but there is so much more to explore behind the wine.

Only a few kilometres from Cape Town you will be blown away by the amazing landscapes and the fantastic wine-estates which created not only a great drink but mostly also many other stunning farmer products.

Stellenbosh & Franschhoek

The most know destination here of course is Stellenbosh, which is home to most of the wine-estates and the large export wine distilleries. But also Franschhoek, where the French first brought their grapes to grow on African soil, is a small village in the corner of the winelands you can not miss! Have dinner or lunch here at one of the many amazing eateries, where you can try all the local wines paired with some stunning food.

You can also vist the best brandy in the world‘s distillery as a digestive after lunch. To get around and taste all the wine safe and guilt-free, we can organise a driver or even have you chauffeured in a vintage Rolls Royce or Bentley or you could even go by helicopter.

Panorama Route

This scenic road runs through the province of Mpumalanga in the east of South Africa. The panorama route connects the Lowveld with the spectacular Drakensberg and lies exactly between the Kruger National Park and the Highlands. Along the route you will see several breathtaking natural wonders! From sensational rock formations to impressive waterfalls and scenic hiking trails.

The small town of Graskop serves as the gateway to this beautiful route with all its beautiful fauna and flora. The absolute highlight of Panorama must be the Blyde River Canyon, the largest green canyon in the world with subtropical vegetation. The other natural attractions that you have to explore along the route are: the spectacular waterfalls (Lisbon, Berlin and Mac Falls), the Three Rondavels and of course the amazing God’s Window. You can perfectly combine this route with your visit to the Kruger Park or even better, with a visit to one of the private concessions s around the park. From Johannesburg or Pretoria you are already there in a few hours. Or who has less time can also leave from Nelspruit itself.

Kruger Park or Private Reserves?

The Kruger National Park or simply Kruger Park is located is the most north-eastern corner of the country. It borders with Zimbabwe in the north and shares its complete eastern boarder with Mozambique. It is perhaps the most famous animal park in the world. The park is 380km long and 60km wide. Besides the “big five” Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Lion and Leopard you can discover a huge variety of animal species here. Kruger Park is laced with lakes and rivers and various hills and creeks which also makes for a very picturesque environment to go on safari. All these advantages and the simple possibility to drive around in the park, makes Kruger logically also the most visited wildlife park in Africa!

Reserves around South Africa

At Atelier Africa we like to avoid the masses and thus we are big fans of the private concessions and reserves bordering the Kruger Park. There are no physical boundaries between all these places and the park so all the wildlife you find inside the park can also be found here.

The difference with a private reserve you find in the EXPERIENCE.
Inside a private reserve you’re not allowed to self-drive. The only cars driving here are the open game-drive vehicles of the lodges or camps located inside that specific reserve. Because there is way less traffic it is also allowed here to off-road with these open and high vehicles, driven and guided by a professional ranger who knows how to tracks specific species. Inside private reserves it is also possible to go out on a night drive or night safari, just before or after dinner, to spot the wild cats (leopard and lions) and dogs (jackal & hyena’s) in their more active mode, which again is not possible inside a national park. Also Walking Safaris, tracking and spotting wildlife on foot, guided by a professional tracker and ranger is only possible in these private safari reserves. South Africa has many of these reserves around Kruger Park, but also in many other areas of the country you can find them.

Some amazing private safaris reserves are also located in malaria-free zones, so you can travel here completely risk free with your young ones. For large families of a group of friends some of these places also offer private villas or houses on the reserve where you then get your own chef, butler, ranger and own safari-vehicle, making it a very luxurious experience at a really affordable price!

When is the best time to go?

South Africa is a year-round destination due to its varying regional climates and wildlife opportunities. The Cape has beautiful hot, dry weather in its summer months between November and February, while the best time to visit for whale watching is between July and November.

What is the best way to travel around

South Africa is a great and amazing self-drive destination. We will give you a very clear Road-Book with all the navigation instructions and tips to visit along the way. You can drive the amazing Wine Route, along the Whale Coast and the Panorama Route in the Western Cape of the country. Or you can drive from Johannesburg towards the Waterberg, the Panorama Route, along the Blyde River Canyon ( the third biggest in the world ) towards the area around Kruger National Park to see big game!

We can also get you a driver or guide to show you around this amazing country. Or even a small plane and private pilot to fly you around is possible.

Another great option is to make use of the old Orient Express style “Rovos Rail” or Blue Rail to explore both sids of country in a relaxed tempo.
