Mumbo Island

Discover Lake Malawi’s Remote Gem

Floating upon the crystal-clear waters of Lake Malawi, tucked within the stunning Lake Malawi National Park, is the remote and exclusive Mumbo Island. The tiny paradise is only about 1 km in diameter, and a mere 100 km East of Malawi’s bustling capital city of Lilongwe. The picture-perfect island is enveloped by Lake Malawi’s sparkling blue waters, offering breathtaking views that stretch as far as the eye can see.

As you step onto the island, you’ll be drawn to the tranquil rock pools and safe-to-swim waters, perfect for a serene escape from the world. You are also bound to be left awe-struck by the fascinating underwater rock formations, shaped by volcanic activity over 2 million years ago.

Stay in Intimate Luxury

The super-exclusive accommodation on Mumbo Island offers a tranquil retreat for just 14 guests at a time. Five charming reed chalets are connected to the main beach by a wooden bridge, each carefully positioned to ensure complete privacy, with its own ensuite bathroom and deck to enjoy breathtaking views of the turquoise waters.

The rustic dining area, bar, and lounge are nestled beneath the shade of a big baobab tree, creating a cosy ambiance perfect for relaxation. You can expect a seafood-based diet during your stay, with locally sourced produce brought in daily from the mainland.

The camp is also committed to sustainability – and it shows in every detail. Vibrant, locally-sourced ‘chitenge’ cloths complete each cushion, while handwoven cane beds and wooden furniture crafted on site add a touch of the natural surroundings.

Explore the Island or Laze About

Mumbo Island offers a range of activities to suit every interest and energy level.

Explore hidden caves and coves in a two-person kayak along the shoreline with expert guides. If you prefer experiencing the magical waters from below, you will have the opportunity to scuba dive to the unique underwater granite boulders with PADI-registered instructors, or stick to the shallower waters with your snorkel gear to marvel at the unusual underwater terrain and exotic species.

You will also be provided with maps of the much-loved hiking trails that weave through the massive boulders and tropical tree species that scatter across the island.

You can, of course, also just kick your feet up and relax! Each tent and chalet is equipped with a hammock that is ideal for afternoon naps or to let off some steam while admiring the view of the lake from your private deck. Learning the local game of Bawo is also a great way to enjoy a low-energy activity and chill out on your well-deserved island holiday.
