Asillia Highlands

Peering over the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater from the slopes of the extinct Olmoti Volcano, Asilia Africa’s Highlands camp offers an adventure like no other.

Millions of years ago,

in beautiful Tanzania, an immense volcano erupted and collapsed on itself, forming the Ngorongoro Crater. Stretching for miles and miles, the crater is now beautiful and rich with diverse flora and fauna. The surrounding area has been declared a conservation site, to be preserved and protected. To the north of the crater sits The Highlands – a camp of eight domed glass and canvas suites, nestled in a lush mountain forest. It is here that you can enjoy a world-class luxury, just a step away from the adventure of a lifetime.

East African architecture

The Highlands’ unique accommodation draws inspiration from traditional East African architecture, namely the Masaai bomas. Each suite offers a king-sized bed, en-suite bathroom, wood-burning stove and breath-taking view from a huge bay window that spans from floor to ceiling. The interior offers a blend of traditional and contemporary, bringing together modern design and African warmth.

Guests can enjoy the privacy of their suite, or unwind in the shared areas which include a bar, library and indoor fireplace surrounded by luxurious seating. The camp serves a variety of gourmet meals, prepared with fresh and locally-grown ingredients, which can be enjoyed in a number of dining areas, including the crater itself.

The Big Five

While the camp itself is stunning, what makes it truly special is its location, and the wide range of activities it offers. Guests can explore the pristine landscape and diverse wildlife in a number of ways including bush walks, forest hikes, game drives and hot air balloon rides. The area is home to some of Africa’s most majestic animals, including the famed Big Five and some rare and endangered species such as the serval cat and black rhino.

For the adventurous travellers, the camp offers guided hikes up the Olmoti volcano along ancient Maasai trails, and descents into the Empakaai and Ngorongoro Craters. The former houses a beautiful soda lake, the shores of which host dozens of pink flamingos. A trip into the Ngorongoro Crater is an unmissable experience as you explore this natural wonder in seven-seater game vehicles, stopping for a specially packed lunch in the shade – a chance to reflect on the earth’s beauty.

an unforgettable experience for travellers

While The Highlands works to offer an unforgettable experience for travellers, its heart lies in protecting the surrounding area. The camp works to ensure a small ecological footprint through cutting-edge technology. In addition to environmental concerns, the camp makes sure to practice sustainable tourism that will benefit local communities. Guests are granted the opportunity to learn more about the local culture and people, with many of the camp’s guides and managers coming from these communities. Not only will you get the chance to ask any questions you may have, but you can pay a visit to nearby homesteads and markets.

Situated in a stunning location and boasting spectacular views, luxurious accommodation and unforgettable adventures, the Asilia Africa Highlands truly is a destination like no other.
