Park National Des Volcanes
This is Africa’s oldest Park and a must-see on your luxury Rwanda Safari! It was established in 1925 to protect the large population of mountain gorillas inside the park.
The park contains six extinct volcanos and thanks to their very fertile soil, the park has an enormous variety in flora. From bamboo forests to open stretches of high grass and swamps.
Inside the park you will find over two hundred bird species, but also herds of mountain elephant, the buffalo, the spotted hyena and the golden monkey are no rare sight!
The star of the Parc National Des Volcanes is undoubtedly the Mountain Gorilla. Thanks to the hollywood production “Gorillas in The Mist” everyone today knows about Diane Fossey and her pioneering work in the fight for survival of the gorilla.
Since her death in 1985 the Parc has been in good hands and every year more and more visitors get to experience the unique sense of standing eye to eye with one of natures’ most amazing creatures.
Part of the Great Lakes of Africa, Lake Kivu forms the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. The lake is one of the most popular holiday destinations for the Rwandans and the surrounding villages offer some accommodation of the highest level with top service.
These great lodges and hotels nearby the beautiful white beaches and the clear deep blue water make a stop at Lake Kivu on your Luxury Rwanda Gorilla Safari a must.
Kigali – the capital
The capital of Rwanda since 1962 is today the most important and largest city in the country. With a population of nearly one million it has grown to be one of the most modern and vibrant African cities since the genocide in 1994.
Kigali today has bars, restaurants, markets, hotels and with the Matatus ( the typical Eastern-African Taxi ) you can get everywhere in the city. The streets are clean and lined with purple Jacaranda tree, the atmosphere is real and easy going, a day in the city is a real joy.
Hotel Des Mille Collines
Known from the movie Hotel Rwanda this four-star hotel is considered as one of the best in Kigali. Previously owned by Belgians’ National Airline, SABENA it was sold in 2005 to a holding group owned by the Rwandan Government and the Rwandan Development Bank.
They have refurbished the complete hotel and updated practically the complete building to a modern day city hotel.
With nice rooms characterised by dark wood panelling and white tiled floors and the excellent service, the Hotel Des Mille Collines is the perfect base for your Rwanda Gorilla Safari.
